My Between the Sheets Directors Pick: Fellini and Brass

This year my Between the Sheets film picks come from two of my favorite Italian directors - Fredrico Fellini and Tinto Brass. 

Fredrico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita (1960) remains in my top five films of all times while Giovanni “Tinto” Brass delivers an erotic cinematographic dance that exposes modern day pornography for the vacuous shell it is.

Few things go better together than a good shag and a film to escape in. 

Movies can help set the mood and buy recovery time for that partner that requires a refractory period.  

When planning the perfect escape to dance in and out of SxXPlay remember your movie pick sets the tone – the ambiance – and can drop you in the mood. 

I recommend starting off Round I with Tinto Brass. Keeping in mind that the priority is partnered oOrgasmic pleasure, these erotic escapades do not require close attention to plot and you can come in and out as you please. 

If sxXPlay is the priority, chances are good you won’t make it past the first 20 minutes. Brass delivers delicious tits and ass that are hard to look away from and easy to revisit.

If kicking off the night with either Paprika (1991) or P.O. Box (1995) you can expect beautiful, titillating characters fornicating in a retro European setting designed to keep the fantasies rolling. While Paprika centers around a brothel and a young big breasted beauty, P.O. Box opens on a secluded beach as two young couples have sex while making seductive eye contact between – a well played voyeuristic exchange.

Once satiated, keep the snacks handy, the crumbs to a minimum and cuddle up for the main event – Fellini’s La Dolce Vita. 

Planned correctly there is no reason to leave the bed. 

Tanya’s Tips:   Whether starting with P.O. Box or Paprika I suggest watching in the native Italian - no dubbing and subtitles unnecessary. Plan on dropping in and out. With Brass, the plot comes second to cinematography. For Round II – La Dolce Vita – do not dub in english the native language drives the film. This one’s an experience. Fellini absolutely warrants subtitles.

I will leave the full discovery of Tinto Brass to you with these few caveats… 

While he can be easily misunderstood as a dirty old man with cinematography delivered from the male gaze I find it hard to look away.  His erotic rom-com heroines do not play hard to get and clearly enjoy what they're doing! 

Director, screenwriter and occasional actor – you can catch him in P.O. Box – Brass spent his 1960-70’s creating avant-garde films including Cosi fan tutte - All Ladies Do It, Monella - Frivolous Lola and, of course, Caligula which is arguably unwatchable aside from a few iconic scenes - fast forward to the ORGY. 

By the 90’s Brass leaned in fully to erotic features giving us Paprika and P.O. Box among other titillating pornographic films that modern day, even female focused, wanna-be-film pornography could learn from. 

Tinto was married to Carla Cipriani from 1957 until her death in 2006, a 49-year marriage during which she frequently collaborated on his films as a screenwriter. They had two children together. Following her death, he later married Caterina Varzi in 2017. While his love and debaucherous admiration for women was always on display his actions illustrated his deep respect for love, marriage and partnership.   

It is no coincidence that both Brass and Fellini worked closely with their partner (wives). 

Fredrico Fellini - Most Influential Filmmaker of All Time

Known for his distinctive baroque images where fantasy and characters collide in a captivatingly real experience, Fellini stands out as one of the greatest directors and screen writers of all time. 

Shot in black and white with no comparison in color, La Dolce Vita is my favorite while his 1963 film 8 ½ is consistently ranked in the Top 10 Greatest Films. 

Whether you chose to start your Fellini journey with 8 ½ or La Dolce Vita and later, du Cinéma or Sight & Sound you will not be disappointed.

While I could ramble on about Fellini all day you must experience it for yourself so I will end my reminiscing with this:

For me, beyond the cinematography and the raw and vibrant characters set in breathtaking historical snapshots I am most drawn to the moments - the deep sense of presence that Fellini consistently captures.

Finally, I would be remiss without sharing my ‘Golden Rule’ for a Shagdelic Film Fest. 

Golden Rule: This is a party for 2 and 3 or more only if monogamy is not your jam.  SxX partner(s) only to this dance party – friends, kids, parents, pets and phones are not welcome!
